Physical illness
When one is healthy, it is easy to act as if health is a given, but when one lives with a physical illness, there is no option to take for granted one’s health and wellbeing and mortality, because it is omnipresent and impossible to ignore. It is in a similar vein that many people do not want to see suffering or illness of any kind. People often either look away or stare with a childlike curiosity. Even in a city like New York in the 21st century, it is still the case that the majority of subway stations and restaurants are not handicap accessible. This unspoken collective blindness inevitably impacts those who are afflicted with illness.Whether it be cancer or heart disease or diabetes or muscular dystrophy or multiple sclerosis or epilepsy or any of the other countless illnesses out there, it is so crucial to have a solid support network to aid in integrating one’s illness into one’s existence in the most productive, proactive and healthy way possible. Many have to deal with relationship problems as a result of illness or work related problems or intrapersonal problems such as depression, shame, and anxiety.
I emphasize the importance of taking care of oneself physically, emotionally, and psychologically, and my goal is to provide a unique resource to people that live with illness in order to help them live more fulfilling lives. I also understand the importance of taking care of caregivers, which is why I also cater to those who are partners of people with physical illnesses and/or family members and close friends.
The goal of my service is to help people with physical challenges better take care of themselves. I offer individual, couple and/or group therapy both for people with physical challenges and also for their family, friends, and loved ones. Please do not hesitate to call or email with any questions and/or to arrange for an initial consultation.
